Resources for newcomers

Are you new to the guild and wondering how to get involved? Here are some resources to get you started.

Communications with the guild and its members

Our email address is AlberniValleyFibre@proton.me. An email to that address goes to guild executive, and this is the best way to communicate with us with questions about events/happenings, memberships, etc…

Communications to the whole membership come through our listersv. You will receive emails from the listserv from the following email address: albernivalleyfibre@lists.riseup.net. You can also send emails to the entire membership by sending an email to that email address (this list is moderated, and it may take some time for your message to be approved). However, note that emails to the listserv go to 100+ listserv subscribers, so please consider whether your email is meant for everyone, or just the guild executive. If you would like to be added to the listserv, please send us an email.

Why a listserv?

Our email host (Protonmail) limits the number of recipients we can have for an email. This is a sensible measure to combat phishing/scammers using their email service. Additionally, we have over 100+ subscribers, and it is not practical to maintain an email list that long. Therefore, we use a listserv service (Riseup) for mass communication. A listserv has the additional benefit of allowing subscribers to unsubscribe with ease.

Regular meetings and meetups:

Our regular monthly meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month, at 6pm, from September to April. Location currently varies as we look for a new meeting space, so please subscribe to the listserv and monitor your inbox.

We have two regular fibre drop-ins. Please feel free to bring spinning, knitting, or any other fibre project you are working on. If you would like to try out spinning, please send us an email and we can arrange to give you an introductory lesson:

  • Every Thursday, 1pm, at Arrowvale Farm.
  • Every alternate Thursday, 6pm, Alberni Valley Museum. Please check museum online calendar or send us email for exact dates, or check our calendar page.

Study Groups

We have three ongoing ad hoc study groups for paid guild members:

  • Basketry. No experience necessary. Please email Leo at lkgeo@proton.me to be added to this group.
  • Weaving. Some weaving experience is required. Please email Cathy at baghog@gmail.com to be added to this group.
  • Dyeing. No experience necessary. Please email Janet at sewcanyou@shaw.ca to be added to this group.
