May was a busy month for the guild as we wind down (in some ways) for the summer.

Events

Sheep-to-Shawl, May 10

The Fibreguild and Arrowvale Campground put on a very successful Sheep-To-Shawl event on May 10. Arrowvale Campground provided the sheep and the space, Garrett’s Sheep Shearing did the shearing, and the youth from the 4H club did the fleece washing under Judy’s guidance. The community showed up in good numbers, and a host of Fibreguild volunteers kept the process running along smoothly.

Many thanks to the Sheep-To-Shawl committee, including Judy, Jean, Cathy, Marg, Vivienne, and Ann, and to all the guild volunteers who came out.

Basketry Workshop

We were pleased to host Cynthia Minden from Denman Island for a one day workshop on basket weaving. Students learned the art of making ribbed baskets, and got a chance to work with local materials including cedar twigs, wisteria, and willow.

Guild News

The guild was very pleased to receive $4000 from the Alberni Valley Community Foundation for our 100-km Wardrobe Challenge project. This money is to be split evenly with C.R.A.F.T./qʷicčiƛma, our co-applicants. We will collectively use the money to build our relationship with C.R.A.F.T studio, and to ground the 100-km Wardrobe Challenge in the abundant history of First Nations textiles in the Valley.

Upcoming events

  • June 07, 1pm-3pm. Learn the art of spool knitting with Cathy Bagley at the Alberni Valley Museum. Free event, drop-in.
  • June 07: This meet-and-greet event is the launch party for the 2-year 100-km Wardrobe Challenge. Participating artists and members are invited to come to the Grove Gallery at 3pm to kick off this exciting challenge.
  • June 13, 14, 15: We are hosting a tapestry workshop with tapestry artist Karen King. This three day tapestry workshop will equip students with the tools and skills to get started on their own tapestry practice. Space is still available in this workshop. Cancelled due to low enrollment.
  • Drop-in spinning is ongoing!
    • Thursday June 05 and 19, 1pm at Arrowvale Campground
    • Thursday June 12, 6pm at McLean Mill
    • Thursday June 26, 6pm, location TBD (check your email as the date approaches!)
    • Saturday, June 28 at the Spirit Square Farmer’s Market, 9am-12pm.
